So you remember a story on the FP that used TLF as a source on the upcoming bronco? No? I t’ s this one.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Well I guess its come back to bite TFL in the ass.

Kinja'd!!!

I think it’s pretty petty of Ford, especially considering they aren’t the source. I guess it shows the difference between “leaks” to the press and actual leaks to the press. That being said, Ford is notoriously leaky in terms of product and it seems like its not going to help anyone to punish the people who pick up on the leaks.

At the same time I feel for TFL I sorta feel like this campaign is a little desperate. The only way it’s going to have any effect is if the person that canned them was acting without authority and/or someone higher up gets wind of it and decides their outlet is a valuable marketing tool. My guess is that no, the person doing the canning has the authority to make that call or they were directed from higher up...in which case it’ s going to take a lot to get back on their good sides. They’ve already pissed off Subaru.

Frankly car manufactures need to develop a little thicker skin IMO. If a reviewer says something bad about your product, consider an engineering solution, not a marketing one. If a reviewer publishes a leak...seal the leak don’t punish the media.

What are your thoughts?

I think the campaign is a bit desperate. Jalopnik was uninvited from the mach e launch while they were on site and I don't remember then whining about it too much. It happens and it's the risk the publications take to be first to provide info. They'll probably be on the ban list for a while but eventually will be allowed again.

They were also blacklisted by GM for a while after leaking the C7 like a year before the concept  came out

Yes it’s childish by Ford, but it’s their party so whatever. I honestly don’t care enough about new cars to really care if I get to know it has a crawl gear a week sooner than I would have. But that’s just me.

How did they piss off Subaru?

I agree that makers need thicker skin, but in the end, they’re trying to protect their business. Even though this was a “good” leak and gained them more attention for an upcoming product, actions like these are probably an attempt to prevent any “bad” leaks in the future. I do wonder if the TFL guys contacted them, let them know the info they had, and gave them a heads up that they were going to go public with it. If they did, I’m guessing Ford threatened with this, and then followed through after they released it.

I’m bummed the TFL guys won’t be at the Bronco reveal (assuming it’s actually a driving event).

Banning media for reporting something told to them is a scumbag move. They do this to discourage media from reporting on more consequential info that may be leaked by employees. Emissions cheating, for example.

I also don’t know how to feel. I get Ford being pissed but it’s kinda an over reaction imo. Funny point how you can tell what they’re okay with leaking.

TFL does seem a tad bit desperate but I get they have a large audience that would be very interested in both products. So it is kinda unfair on Ford's end to exclude them.

I think when you announce a product and wait years to show or detail anything then stuff is going to leak out. They’ve been hyping it up but not showing anything which is begging for leaks.

I don’t like TFL but m y understanding is that TFL didn’t take the pictures but showed them. I think it’s fair to show it, they weren’t the source of the leak. Also pretty much everything has leaked on the Bronco at this point and that’s on Ford anyway. They don’t seem to have a tight lid. I don’t think they should have been banned. I find it odd too that they banned them from the F150 unless they will be banned from everything.

That said I don’t see Ford backing down, it’s their launch and they can do whatever they want.

RE: Subaru, they told the truth about how their CVT’s suck off-road and Subaru Cut them off from press cars. So they bought an outback and did the tests themselves. Like I said above - if you are embarrassed by something a reviewer said...and its factual...maybe take that energy back to the engineering teams or ot the decision makers instead of shooting the messenger .

It’s generally concerning when large corporations try to silence news outlets that report true facts . No matter the reason or means. No matter whether you like or dislike the corporation or news outlet in question.

I always thought that the unspoken rule was to never be the one to reveal leaked info , but that it’s ok t o report on others doing so . This case appears to be that TFL was the one that got ahold of the original photos from “an anonymous source”, then chose to reveal them, with their logo splattered all over them .

Seems kinda dumb for them to ruin what was a good manufacturer relationship, for very little return. Looking at view counts, they got more for legitimate RAV4 content than illegitimate Bronco stuff.

That’s not how independent media works, bud. What you’re looking for is an advertisement.

Kinja'd!!!

What does the concept of independent media have to do with revealing confidential information about unreleased products? What does either of those have to do with advertising?
